    Yes, you're right, mgetty doesn't support Class 1, but as far as I know,
    they cannot do adaptive answer, so why does it say "FAX" here???
    
I can't speak for the 3400 model but the Lifestyle 28.8 definitely
supports adaptive answer (and quite well at that).  I now see what
the log is saying and it is what one would expect for a Class 1 modem:

	<-- ATA
	--> FAX
	--> CONNECT

This is the start of a Class 1 receive session; the HDLC frames follow
the connect.  BTW, to answer a data call using adaptive answer it's
a bit tricky; you need to send ATO and then wait for a CONNECT response.
As far as I know this handshake is unique to Motorola modems.
