Hi,
I took the liberty of including "mgetty@muc.de" (the mgetty mailing list)
into this discussion, as I'm quite interested what others think about your
proposal.

I know that others do it, Telebit's NetBlazer is one example. I'm not very
happy with it, though.
My proposal would be to initialize with AT&F (to get a known state) and
just set those things that are different from the factory defaults. On a
reasonable modem, this isn't very much anyway.

Not yet. It was/is planned, but actually it's not really needed (normally),
so I didn't do it yet.
