mgetty 0.98 - checking modem config

It makes more sense to me to implement your modem configuration
checker as a separate utility. You could run it when you get a new
modem and also run it from cron to see if things have changes when they
shouldn't have. It would just set the tty lock file like any other
program using the modem and do its thing.

Just my $.02,
Costa

I was just thinking the other day "wouldn't it be nice if mgetty could be
setup to check the modem configuration, and write 'my' settings to the
modem's nvram when it finds a [new] modem not yet so initialized.

I thought I could do this with seb-expect sub-send chat strings (as
documented in the man page for the chat that comes with pppd)...but mgetty
doesn't seem to support these sub strings. Is there another way to have
mgetty send string2 or string3 depending on the result it gets from
sending string1 in the init string? I've heard that you can only write to
nvram so many times...so I'd rather not write the nvram unless it needs
   it.
