Well yesturday I tryed a package called gsm-1.0.tar.gz that I found on
sunsite (so I knew there wouldn't be any compilation problems). But
apparently gsm is more a technique than a standard. The package works very
well (quite impressive) but doesn't seem to decode the USR-created sound
files, nor encode them properly (it says there's a bad frame...). I tryed
removing some of the leading bytes (may be there's some kind of a special
header) but it didn't seem to help. I also tryed compressing a soundfile
with gsm and playing on the modem but I only got garbage.

I'm going to look for other gsm packages and technical info on gsm. However
I'd appreciate any precisions on the USR specs...
