Hi all!

This is the first public release of the reconstructed vgetty code. I have
been working on this under heavy time pressure, so there are many things
missing (see the voice/ToDo file for details) and probably many bugs in the
new code. I release this mostly for people, that want to develop stuff for
the new code. And of course, because I was so stupid to promise you a
deadline. This is no smooth sailing stable release! If you look for a plug
and play solution, please be patient. The net community will find most of my
bugs within a few weeks, I'm sure. :-) I will post a note to the mgetty
list, as soon as I consider this new code stable for real use.

Please have a look at the voice/ToDo file. If there is something missing,
that you would like to see, please let me know, I probably add it to the
ToDo list. If there is something you want to do, please get in contact with
me first, to avoid, that two people are working on the same problem.

Also please check the voice/Credits file. It's very incomplete and I need
feedback and hints about all the good guys that wrote good stuff, that I
forgot.

Don't trust the documentation! I had no time to update it.

Ok, now first the bad news: Only the ZyXEL 1496, the ZyXEL 2864 and the Elsa
Microlink are supported at the moment. Expect this to change very soon. I'm
busy working on it. Also the shell scripts are missing. There are two demo
scripts for the new voice library. I'm working on the rest.

And the good news: Vgetty is now configured by a configuration file. Most
paramters can be set from there. Some features are even enhanced! The new
design is much more flexibel about modem hardware, so I expect it to be
portable to new generation ISDN modems or modems with direct DMA support or
whatever the future will bring us. The format of the header for modem data
has changed and the PVF format will get a haeder very soon. See
voice/magic.voice for the definition of the new formats.

With this mail, Gert gets the new code. As soon as he has time to put all
the stuff together, he will upload a new mgetty beta including this new
code. This might take a short while. So don't get nervous, it's on the way
to you...

Hope everybody had a Merry Christmas and I wish all of you a happy new year!

Bye,
Marc
