I still have in a box somewhere among all this compujunk a PMMI S-100
modem -- the same as the one that Ward Christensen wrote the original
xmodem protocol for.  It was rated 300 baud, but on a clean line, you
could crank it up to 720 baud.  Now that was really cooking, circa
1979.

I also worked with the 202-C half duplex 1200 baud modems in 1971, and
the 2000 baud bisync modems on an IBM 2780 remote batch terminal in
1969.  We have come a loooooonnnnnnnnggggggggg way.  

I am now working on a board for a client that has 168 T1 lines coming
into it and drops it all onto a 20 GB/sec ATM switching fabric.  Now
thats cooking, 1997 style!
