I play the baritone sax, and I like "the little big horn" (Gerry
Mulligan) probably best of all, but for tenor, I like Sonny Stitt,
Sonny Rollins, Rashan Roland Kirk, and of course John Coletrain. For
really far out tenor, Pharoh Sanders is certainly the best, but not
everybody can handle the stuff he dishes out. Sidney Bechet is
probably the best soprano sax player that ever lived. Eric Dolphy and
Flip Phillips would be my first choices for bass clarinet. Eric also
plays an excellent flute, but for a more modern sound, Jeremy Stieg is
very good.
Don't get me started naming Hammond organ players (I also play
Hammond), or I will be here all night. :-)
