On women in the pulpit....
If the sanctity of the pulpit is what is in question, then may I state in
the early church they (the apostolic bretheren and sisters) preached and
worshipped God in houses, in the markets, in caves, in the woods but
*seldom* in a synagogue (or church building).
In fact you find them being thrown out and put in jail most times they came
near a synagogue , especially after the crucifixtion Of Jesus Christ.
Remember we are talking of a time of extreme persecution when it was not
wise to assemble in a public place.
When being a christian was a literal matter of life and death (physically
speaking).
There were no fancy pews, no communion tables and pulpit furniture.
Old testament scripture was memorized and told father to son, the only
written copies being in custody of the scribes , jewish rabbi's and
the Sanhedrin and kept in care in the synagogue.
A preacher then in Apostolic times was anyone who "preached" the gospel of
Jesus Christ, any where. Churches were held in peoples homes.
As in Pauls letter to the elect lady.
Whose children were her spiritual children (in addition to any possible
children after the flesh), converts to Jesus who assembled in her home to
worship and be taught about Jesus.
It was customary to call those you had brought to God 'your children', as
evidenced by Paul in his reference to his 'son' Timotheus whom he had won to
God.
A previous writer:..said............................
"The entire idea of women in the pulpit didn't form out from a vacuum. It
came
out of the modern world (because it doesn't appear to come from the word)
and
the contemporary idea that any difference between men and women can be
interpreted as a slight toward women. "
I can and do preach / teach , witness, via the internet, web pages, (like
Paul by letters , did he not do a great deal of his preaching and teaching
by letters, the epistles)?
I can and do teach or preach in my home and all the above.
I can and have witnessed door to door, and at street meetings .
What form of preaching , teaching, and witnessing did the apostles do that I
cannot do?
And how many Apostles preached behind a pulpit every Sunday morning?
Standing behind the pulpit is not proof of being called of God.
For the word of God says, " By their fruits ye shall know them".
I think being a soul winner is proof of a God using a person.
Having converts would be having fruit, or spiritual children.
And preaching to one person on a individual basis who becomes converted and
saved is important .
As well as a group as in the case of Mary bringing the good news to the
downhearted disciples.............
If I can win a soul, convert a sinner from his ways, get a baclslider to
turn back to God then you can have your "pulpit" and the traditions of men.
Because I know that I will get my reward by and by.
Oh I am not saying I dont ever speak behind a pulpit because I have and
probably will sometime in the future, but it is not a "status" symbol to me.
Doesnt the word say that when you give alms or do good deeds to be seen of
men and to enjoy their praise that you already have all the reward your ever
gonna get?
It says to do your good deeds and give your alms in secret does it not?
That your heavenly father who seeth in secret will reward you openly.
So Go ahead , keep the sanctity of your "men only" pulpit, it dont bother
me. ; )
I have enough sense to know that you cannot please everyone and you can
seldom get a whole room of minsters to agree on the exact definition of a
passage of scripture.
So I guess we'll just have to agree , to disagree.
And I do so I good Spirit. : )
And May the redeemed of the Lord say So!.
("SO"!!!!)
; )
