* Hurricane Pauline. The destruction of Hurricane Pauline was on the news,
followed a mont later by Hurricane Rick. Both hurricanes basically hit
Mexico in the same area - states of Oaxaca and Guerrero. Regretfully, some
of our Church people in Acapulco, where Brother Mario Garcia is the Pastor,
we affected. One of our UPCM Church members was killed. Brother Fidel Soto
who was an aspiring Minister with a Christian Workers' License, was killed as
his house was right in the path of one of the torrents of water, and he was
swepted away. Fortunately, his family was somewhere else at that moment. He
was swept away by the current, house and all. As yet his body has not been
found. But, where his house stood, there is nothing. The Churches in Mexico
City and Cuernavaca quickly gathered food stuffs and clothes and sent them
down to Acapulco. We also want to thank Compassion Services for providing
some financial assistance to help the brethren in Acapulco.
* Brent Long famiy now in Mexico City. We are happy to inform you that
Brother and Sister Brent Long (and their two little girls) have moved to
Mexico City, and are involved in the Work as AIMers. They are originally
from Oregon, but the last four years, Brother Long was Assistant Pastor to
Brother Jerry Jones in St. Louis, Mo.
* Gilbert Morales family now in Puebla, Mexico. We are also happy to
inform you, that Brother and Sister Gilbert Morales (and their three little
boys) have just moved to the city of Puebla, and are involved in the Work as
AIMers. Brother Morales is originally out of Brother Tim Wallace's Church in
San Antonio, Texas. They are going to be working on raising a Work in the
city of Puebla, with its over 2 million population.
* District Conventions. During the second half of the year each District
in Mexico (and we have 17) has their District Convention. In the last three
weeks we've had six of them - Merida, Cuernavaca, Mexico City, Veracruz,
Coahuila, Guadalajara, Villahermosa. It is exciting to see how the Work is
growing. Adding up the attendance and results just in those six District
Conventions we had over 4300 in attendance, 43 were watered baptized and 409
received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. There is growth and revival in
Mexico!
* A bit of humor. Let me share with you something that I was told
recently. We have a number of American brethren come to our National
Conventions - especially, because of the nearness to the U.S. In our
Convention in Mexico City last year, one of the Yucatan Pastors saw one of
the American Pastors, and the American Pastor said: "God bless you." The
Mexican Pastor thought he said (thinking in Spanish), "Dame un beso" (give
me a kiss). So this poor Mayan indian Pastor thought, "Well, they must greet
each other with a kiss - like the Bible!" Wanting to be polite and a good
christian (didn't want to be rude to the visitors!) - so, he gave him a kiss!
The American Pastor must have been quite surprised, for he gave this Mayan
Pastor 200 pesos (roughly $30 U.S. dollars). Be careful what you say when
you're visiting Mexico! Ha.
